Bangalore, one of the fastest growing cosmopolitan cities in Asia also holds the status of being the capital city of the Southern state of Karnataka. According to state historians, Bangalore got its name from "Benda Kalu Ooru" (the place of boiled beans). The story goes that in the late 14th century, a King strayed into this area on his hunting trip and a woman offered him a meal of boiled beans, which he found to be tastier than his royal fare. To commemorate the incident he named it "Benda Kalu Ooru", which later changed to Bangalore.
Bangalore has a lot of tourist attractions including the famous Bangalore Palace and Fort, Lal Bagh – the botanical garden laid out by Hyder Ali and his son, the ISKCON temple, the Gangadharesware temple and much more. There are also various places to visit around Bangalore. The palace of the famous Tipu Sultan and the Bannerghatta National Park are must see for anyone coming to Bangalore.
Shopping alone can be a big motivation for visiting Bangalore. From exquisitely carved handicrafts made from sandalwood and rose wood to jewelry and garments you can find it all. Some of the most popular shopping joints in Bangalore are M.G.Road, Brigade Road, Residency Road and Commercial Street.
Bangalore is well connected by air, rail and road to all the major cities such as Delhi, Madras, Bombay, Calcutta and to most other important cities and towns. There are regular train services from Madras (4 trains per day), Mysore (7 trains per day), Calcutta (weekly twice), New Delhi (1 service daily). Bangalore Airport is used for both domestic and international flights.
